Explicit Function
A function where the dependent variable y is isolated on one side of the equation.
Implicit Function
A relationship where x and y are intermixed in an equation and may not pass the vertical line test.
Implicit Differentiation
A technique used to find the derivative of y with respect to x without isolating y.
Chain Rule
A rule that states when differentiating a composite function, the derivative is the derivative of the outer function times the derivative of the inner function.
Horizontal Tangent
Occurs when the slope of the tangent line is 0; set the numerator of the derivative equal to 0.
Vertical Tangent
Occurs when the slope of the tangent line is undefined; set the denominator of the derivative equal to 0.
Quotient Rule
A method for finding the derivative of a quotient of two functions.
Circle Equation
An implicit equation of the form x² + y² = r² that defines a circle.
Folium of Descartes
An implicit equation defined as y³ + x³ = 6xy.
Power Rule
A rule to find the derivative of x^n, which is n*x^(n-1).
Product Rule
A rule used to find the derivative of a product of two functions.
Numerator (in derivatives)
The top part of the fraction representing the slope in the derivative expression.
Denominator (in derivatives)
The bottom part of the fraction representing the slope in the derivative expression.
First Derivative
The derivative of a function, representing the rate of change or the slope of a curve.
Second Derivative
The derivative of the first derivative, representing the rate of change of the rate of change.
Slope of a Tangent Line
The value of the derivative at a specific point on a curve.
Critical Points
Points on a graph where the derivative is zero or undefined and can indicate local maxima or minima.
Implicit Equation
An equation that defines a relationship between x and y without expressing one explicitly in terms of the other.
Differentiation Procedure
A series of steps followed to compute the derivative of a function.
Evaluation of Derivative
The process of substituting specific values into a derivative to find the slope at that point.
Algebraic Manipulation
The process of rearranging and simplifying algebraic expressions.
Graph of Implicit Function
A graphical representation that may show multiple y-values for a single x-value.
Tangent Line
A straight line that touches a curve at a particular point without crossing it at that point.
Algebraically Difficult Functions
Functions that are hard to express explicitly or manipulate algebraically.
Slope Formula
A formula used to calculate the steepness of a line; often derived from the derivative.
Complex Fractions
Fractions that contain other fractions in the numerator or denominator.
Original Implicit Equation
The initial equation from which derivatives are derived.
Coordinate Points
Specific pairs of x and y values that represent locations on a graph.
