Style

Diction

Syntax
The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences.
Denotation
The literal dictionary definition of a word.
Connotation
The emotional or cultural associations carried by a word.
Formal/Elevated Diction
Polysyllabic words, no contractions, professional tone.
Colloquial/Informal Diction
Conversational language, often includes slang and contractions.
Abstract Language
Language referring to ideas and qualities rather than tangible objects.
Concrete Language
Language that involves tangible, sensory details.
Active Voice
A sentence structure where the subject performs the action (e.g., 'The committee made a mistake.').
Passive Voice
A sentence structure where the subject receives the action (e.g., 'Mistakes were made.').
Tone
The author's attitude toward the subject or audience.
Mood
The atmosphere or emotion felt by the reader, distinct from tone.
DIDLS
A mnemonic for analyzing tone: Diction, Imagery, Details, Language, Syntax.
Imagery
Sensory language used to make abstract arguments concrete.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares two unlike things to clarify understanding.
Simile
A figure of speech that explicitly compares two unlike things using 'like' or 'as.'
Irony (Verbal)
Stating the opposite of what is meant to highlight absurdity or hypocrisy.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect to emphasize a point.
Periodic Sentence
A complex sentence whose main clause is withheld until the end.
Cumulative (Loose) Sentence
A sentence where the main clause comes first, followed by modifying phrases.
Parallelism
The use of similar grammatical structures for related ideas to create rhythm.
Antithesis
A form of parallelism that contrasts two opposing ideas.
Rhetorical Situation
The context in which a piece of writing is created, influencing style choices.
