Chapter 1: "Ralph grasped the idea and hit the shell with air from his diaphragm.... The note boomed again: and then at his firmer pressure, the note, fluking up an octave became a strident blare more penetrating than before." (17)
This was the first time ralph blows the conch, it shows that he will control the island, and it shows that they are going to create a society. they are going to come together and try to create rules for a society.
Chapter 2: "The boys were falling still and silent, feeling the beginnings of awe at the power set free below them. The knowledge and the awe made him savage." (44)
foreshadowing about what is going to happen to most of the boys. realizing the power they can have. this takes place where half of the island is on fire and the mulberry kid dies.
Chapter 3: "He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up." (51)
talking about Jack. takes place when he started hunting, he was down on all fours and he hadn't killed anything yet. shows what is going to happen to him. all he is going to want to do is hunt. savagery is going to take over him.
Chapter 4: "...the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness." (64)
freedom to act differently. freedom from society. foreshadowing of what is going to happen. most of the boys will follow in jacks footsteps and take over the island. with the mask on jack isn't jack. he is a new person.
Chapter 5: "' What I mean is... maybe it's only us.'" (89)
Simon says this. talking about the beast. when they are having a meeting and asking if there was a beast or not. Simon is the voice of reason and truth. he is a Christ figure. He was killed for saying the truth.
Chapter 6: "But a sign came down from the world of grownups.... There was a speck above the island, a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute, a figure that hung with dangling limbs." (95)
showing the grownups are just as bad as the children. they are tarring society apart by war. an example of irony. Ralph asks for a sign from the adults and a dead guy appears. that proves that the world doesn't have civilization.
Chapter 7: "Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering." (115)
showing that ralph too has savagery in him. when they are hunting the beast and Robert is pretending to be a pig and they are chanting around him. ralph was apart of that.
Chapter 8: "'Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!... You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?'" (143)
Simon when he was talking to the lord of the flies. they are all afraid of the beast, but they need to be afraid of themselves. Simon knows the truth.
Chapter 9: "The beast lay huddled on the pale beach and the stains spread, inch by inch." (153)
after Simon was killed. calling him the beast. the stains were his blood. he was beaten by everyone because he told the truth. they were biting him, punching him, beating him. even Ralph.
Chapter 10: "He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy's broken glasses." (168)
talking about Jack when he raided Piggy's shelter and took piggy's glasses that were already broken. shift in power. foreshadowing because he made stabbing motions. Jack always wanted to be the chief. he used his power for evil. when he gets mad he gets out of control. he is a tyrant. he wants the power but without the consequences of his actions.
Chapter 11: "The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist." (181)
Piggy died. when the conch broke, civilization was completely gone. when piggy and the conch fall apart/die, society does too. Rodger killed Piggy
Chapter 12: "A semicircle of little boys, their bodies streaked with colored clay, sharp sticks in their hands, were standing on the beach making no noise at all." (200)
when they are getting rescued. they were chasing ralph trying to kill him. the officer said "all fun and games?" but didn't realize that one of them was about to get killed. he had the adult perspective. shows reality. the naval/army guy took the children back to a place that has been torn up by war. the beast will always be with them.
ralph
chief. the protagonist, the main character, the entire book revolves around him. he changes a lot. he realized what man is capable of at the end of the book.
Jack
the antagonist. he changes a lot. he was not a savage or killer in the beginning of the book. he gives into the darkness. he is an effective leader.
simon
he speaks the truth. A Christ figure. he has the intelligence. he is the voice of reason. he is part of the protagonists. he speaks the truth and died for it. he doesn't change. he is an outsider
piggy
he represents science, knowledge. he is an outsider. a victim of murder. he is underestimated. he has asthma. he doesn't change much. his glasses show him the difference between good and evil.
Rodger
pure evil. always had evil in him. tortures sam and eric. an antagonist. he is a terrible person. he is a psychopath. he is furtive.
Naval Officer
unknowing. an adult perspective. represents reality. makes what is happening look insignificant. takes the boys back to a place that has been destroyed by war.
