Credit will be given for a score of 4 or 5.
50 percent of your final score is attributed to multiple-choice and grid-in questions.
Incorrect answers to multiple-choice questions are not deducted for points. There is no penalty for guessing if you try to eliminate incorrect answer choices.
50 percent of your final score is attributed to free-response questions.
A score on the 1-to-5 scale is used to convert your score on the two test sections.
The College Board started the Advanced Placement program in 1955 to give high school students the chance to be awarded advanced placement as first-year students in colleges and universities in the United States. More than a million students from every state in the nation and from foreign countries take the annual AP exams in May.
High school students who want to take college-level courses can enroll in the AP programs. The AP Biology course and exam are designed to involve high school students in college-level biology studies.
We found what we were looking for after surfing the College Board website.
The AP Development Committee is made up of college and high school biology instructors. Ensuring that the annual AP Biology exam reflects what is being taught and studied in college-level biology classes at high schools is the job of the committee.
A large number of multiple-choice questions written by this committee are pretested and evaluated for clarity, appropriateness, and range of possible answers. AP readers will be able to evaluate the essays equally if the questions that best represent the full range of the scoring scale are chosen by the committee.
The AP Biology exam is thoroughly evaluated after it is administered each year. The College Board can use the results to make course suggestions and plan future tests.
A 1 indicates that you aren't qualified to receive college credit.
A grade of 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 will usually be reported by early July.
Only you can answer that question. The reasons students have given for taking the AP exam are listed below.
They wanted to compare themselves with other students.
Colleges look favorably on the applications of students who enroll in AP courses.
They want to get college credit or advanced standing.
They love the subject.
Their families will be proud of them.
The primary reason for taking the AP Biology exam in May is to feel good about yourself, no matter what else is going on.
Some common questions students have about the AP Biology exam are listed here.
Some high schools don't offer this type of course for students who have had a year's course in AP Biology. Many students in these high schools did well on the exam, even though they had not taken the course.
If your high school offers an AP Biology course, take advantage of it and the structured background it will give you.
The exam will last three hours. There are 63 multiple-choice questions and six grid-in questions in the first section. You have 90 minutes to complete this part of the test.
You will be given a brief break after you complete the multiple-choice section. The administrator's length of break can vary. You can't return to the multiple-choice questions when you return to the examination room.
There are two long free-response questions and six short free-response questions in the second section of the exam. The section will be split into two parts, a 10-minute reading period and an 80 minute writing period. You will be tested on your understanding of the four big ideas in biology and how science investigators actually work.
If the College Board decides to use one or more of your essays as a model, this is a way for them to make sure they have your permission. Readers of your essays don't pay attention to whether or not that box is checked. Your grade will not be affected by checking the box.
The number of correct answers is counted by a computer when the scanned sheet is run. There are usually four choices for the AP Biology questions.
The AP/College Board members have developed a highly successful training program. To ensure a fair and equitable reading of each essay, set up your study program readers with many opportunities for checks and double checks.
The scoring guides are developed by a chief faculty consultant, a question leader, table leaders, and content experts. They become experts in that one question. Nobody knows the identity of a writer. The identification numbers and names are covered, and the exam booklets are randomly distributed to the readers. Table leaders and question leaders review reader scores to make sure quality standards are constant.
Each essay is scored on a scale from 1 to 10. The next set of calculations is completed once your essay is graded on this scale.
Fuzzy math comes into play here. The AP Biology exam has a score of 136. 50 percent of the score is represented by the free-response section.
The multiple-choice section makes up 50 percent of the score.
The score from the multiple choice section and the score from the essay section are used to calculate the total score.
The total scores needed to earn a 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 change each year is what you should keep in mind. The cutoffs are determined by a committee of experts. College students are given the same exam as high school students. The college students did well on the exam. The chief faculty consultant needs to know where to draw the lines for a 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 score. The average score received by college students who scored an A on the exam is set by a score of 5. A score of 3 or 4 is equivalent to a college grade B.
The number of points required to achieve a specific grade has been shown to have an observable trend over the years. Allow plenty of time to get to the test site.
The test is an enjoyable challenge and a chance to share your knowledge, so remind yourself that you are well prepared. You worked hard. There is nothing you can do after test day. Your only job is to answer as many questions correctly as you can.
There may be some value in a last-minute review. It is helpful for students to spend the night before the exam with family or friends. You can watch a movie, play a game, talk on the phone, and then find a quiet spot to study. You can flip through your notebook while you're relaxing.
If you are about to take the exam, you might want to put together a list of topics that have troubled you and review them the night before the exam. If you can't fall asleep, you can flip through our chapter on classification. You will be ready to drift off within moments.

Focus on the topics that are most likely to increase your score.
If you study the topics that you are afraid of, you will be able to relax.
Some of the more detailed topics on the AP Biology exam can be forgotten if you study too much.
