Charter - Official document that permitted colonists to settle on land claimed by their ruler

Cash Crop - Crop grown to be sold to make a profit

Indentured Servant - A person who agreed to work for someone for a certain period of time in exchange for the cost of the voyage to North America

House of Burgesses - Law making assembly in colonial Virginia

Pilgrims - Early European settlers of Plymouth colony

Mayflower Compact - An agreement the Pilgrims made before landing in New England to make and obey “just and equal laws”
