Biology Study Guide
Ch. 1
Vocabulary Terms
Science - the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
Data - facts, and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.
Cell - the basic membrane-bound unit that contains the fundamental molecules of life and of which all living things are composed.
Spontaneous Generation - the supposed production of living organisms from nonliving matter, as inferred from the apparent appearance of life in some supposedly sterile environments.
Biology - the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution.
Homeostasis - the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
Metabolism - the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
Predation - the preying of one animal on others.
Biosphere - the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms.
