11.1 Energy Requirements of People

  • We will look at energy consumption, heat flow, andature control in animals.
    • Most of the examples will be specific to people, but the principles are applicable to all animals.
  • Energy is needed to function living systems.
    • This energy is used in animals to circulate blood, get oxygen, and repair cells.
    • Even at complete rest in a comfortable environment, the body needs energy to function.
  • The energy expenditure goes up with activity.
  • The amount of energy a person consumes depends on their weight and build.
    • It has been found that the amount of energy consumed by a person during a given activity is the same for most people.
    • The energy used for various activities is usually quoted in Cal/m2.
    • Table 11.1 shows the rates of metabolism for some human activities.
    • To get the total energy consumption per hour, we divide the rate by the surface area of the person.
