The president wasn't able to do much at this point, only keep the position there

Madison's vice president, Monroe, became a two term president

The idea was that the president wasn't going to be super involved in the economy

Missouri tries to become a US state, but it wants to be admitted as a slave state

Congress didn't want slave states to have majority, so they said no

Missouri wanted to have slaves so that led to a choice between slaves and statehood, they choose the former

Politicians agree to allows Missouri in as a slave state on the compromise that Maine was allowed in as a free state to keep the balance of power in the senate

This compromise also stopped slavery in the Louisiana territory north of the 36 degree latitude

Founders thought that slavery would die out but it didn't because of the new inventions like the cotton gin

John Quincy Adams was president after Monroe

Latin American countries started revolting, like Mexico

Latin American countries were angry because of the power struggle and the loss of resources

France gets involved with the Mexico conflict

US supports Mexico's battle for independence

This also led to the US breaking more ties with Europe so that they could trade with Mexico

The Monroe Doctrine tells European countries not to interfere with affairs in the New World, and if they don't then the New World countries won't mess with European affairs

Era of good feelings started because of more people started trading (like craftsmen), equality of opportunity was degrading, and people assumed everyone was more equal because of the ability for opportunity among everyone

This led to freedom of the press

The production for enjoyment, like music or art, began to be available for the common person

Party organizations formed that helped with funding and advertising for the different parties and campaigns

Politics really emerge among the people

The era of good feelings led to more Hamiltonian ideas

Two parties started forming

The panic of 1819 happened when banks started going under because they started giving out loans to people who shouldn't have gotten it, leading them to run out of money

Other reasons were that some people wanted to get rid of banks, money, and credit, and economics became a main issue in politics

Andrew Jackson was a war hero and became a symbol of democracy's triumph

The election of 1824 was a five way race

Jackson won the popular vote

Candidates were Jackson, Adams, Crawford, Calhoun, and Clay

The people supported Jackson, politicians supported Adams

Jackson didn't get the majority so it went to the House of Representatives for debate

Adams appoints Clay as the Secretary of State, which made it look like the two were conspiring for power
